Phenoxyethanol is made from etherification of ethylene glycol and phenol. It’s colorless and slight viscous liquid with aromatic smell, slightly soluble in water and easily soluble in ethanol and sodium hydroxide.
Solvent properties
Phenoxyethanol has good solubility and miscibility. It is often used as a diluent for fragrances. It is a good solvent and penetration aid for hair dyes and nail polishes, a solvent and modifier for inks and ballpoint pen oils, and a penetrant for ink pads.
Anti-bacterial properties
Phenoxyethanol has a special antibacterial effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and has an antibacterial effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Because it has a considerable solubility in water, white mineral oil, isopropyl palmitate and other cosmetic components. In addition, it is highly effective, broad-spectrum, low-toxic and non-allergenic (2.2% aqueous solution is non-irritating to the skin), so it is widely used in cosmetic creams and shampoos.
